How to Play Omaha Holdem Pot Limit Online

The game of Omaha Holdem pot limit shares many similarities with its Texas Holdem counterpart such as betting structures and hand rankings. The primary difference however surrounds the number of cards in play for each player. Each player receives 4 hole cards and must use 2 of these, combined with 3 of the 5 community cards to make their final hand.

The Deal and Blinds

When you play Omaha Holdem pot limit online the dealer of the first hand is usually decided by a 'face up' deal of cards around the table. The player with the highest card becomes the dealer. Before a deal can commence the 'blinds' must place their compulsory bets. The small blind is always the player to the left of the dealer and usually places a bet of half a small bet. If we are using a game of $2/$4 then this bet would be $1. This is followed by a big blind bet which is equal to one small bet, in our example this would be $2. It is then time for the dealer to lay down some cards. The dealer deals 4 cards to each player, one at a time around the table. These cards are all placed face down to ensure they are only known by the individual players.

The First Betting Round

Betting continues with the player to the left of the big blind. The essence of pot limit poker games is the betting structure. Betting is limited by the value of the pot and a player may only raise by the current value of the pot (plus the call they would have to make.) Therefore, if the pot currently stands at 10 chips and the player must call 4 chips to stay in, they have 3 choices available to them. The player can call the 4 chips, raise the bet by 14 chips (the 4 chip call plus the 10 already in the pot) or fold. The same rules apply to the next player to the left. All players proceed to make their bets around the table and play only moves to the next level when all players wishing to stay in have an equal bet in front of them.

The Flop

Once all players have had a chance to bet, the dealer deals 3 cards face up on the table. These cards are known as community cards and are available for all players to use in their hand. Another betting round takes place, starting with the player in the small blind position. The minimum bet is the lower bet which in our example is $2. They could check the bet passing it onto the following player or raise (sticking to the pot limit rules.) They may also fold if they wish. Betting continues around the table in the normal way until all players have reached the same amount.

The Turn

The fourth community card to be dealt by the dealer is known as the turn card. Betting starts again with the small blind, the only difference from now on is that the minimum bet is the large bet which in our game is $4.

The River

When all players have made their bets the final community card is dealt by the dealer. This is known as the river card. Betting follows the same structure as the previous round and all players that want to stay in the game must call to the same level. If more than one player remains at the end of the betting then there must be a showdown to determine the winner. All remaining players must show their cards making their best hand from 2 of their hole cards and 3 of the community cards.
